Facial Manipulations, Emotional Empathy, and Facial Feedback
نویسندگان
چکیده
According to the facial feedback hypothesis (FFH) one's own expressions have a corresponding impact on subjective experience of emotion. Inspired by Strack, et al. [1] participants in present study hold wooden stick between teeth (forming smile) or lips sulky face) while rating humorous films. In contrast FFH it was found that people scoring low emotional empathy rated films as less funny happy versus manipulation whereas high did not differ two manipulations.

Emotional Empathy and Facial Mimicry for Static and Dynamic Facial Expressions of Fear and Disgust
Facial mimicry is the tendency to imitate the emotional facial expressions of others. Increasing evidence suggests that the perception of dynamic displays leads to enhanced facial mimicry, especially for happiness and anger. However, little is known about the impact of dynamic stimuli on facial mimicry for fear and disgust. To investigate this issue, facial EMG responses were recorded in the co...
متن کاملEmpathy, emotional contagion, and rapid facial reactions to angry and happy facial expressions.
The aim was to explore whether emotional empathy is related to the capacity to react with rapid facial reactions to facial expressions of emotion, and if emotional empathy is related to the ability to experience a similar emotion as expressed by another person. People high or low in emotional empathy were exposed to pictures of happy and angry faces while their facial electromyography from the ...
متن کاملHow Does Facial Feedback Modulate Emotional Experience?
Contracting muscles involved in facial expressions (e.g. smiling or frowning) can make emotions more intense, even when unaware one is modifying expression (e.g. Strack, Martin, & Stepper, 1988). However, it is unresolved whether and how inhibiting facial expressions might weaken emotional experience. In the present study, 142 participants watched positive and negative video clips while either ...
متن کاملEmotional mimicry signals pain empathy as evidenced by facial electromyography
Facial mimicry has been suggested to be a behavioral index for emotional empathy. The present study is the first to investigate the link between facial muscle activity and empathy for pain by facial electromyographic (EMG) recording while observers watched videos depicting real-life painful events. Three types of visual stimulus were used: an intact painful scene and arm-only (needle injection)...
متن کاملFrom facial mimicry to emotional empathy: A role for norepinephrine?
Tendency to mimic others' emotional facial expressions predicts empathy and may represent a physiological marker of psychopathy. Anatomical connectivity between amygdala, cingulate motor cortex (M3, M4), and facial nucleus demonstrates a potential neuroanatomical substrate for mimicry, though pharmacological influences are largely unknown. Norepinephrine modulation selectively impairs negative ...
